Description
In 2020, Andrey Trubin was invited to collaborate with the Nizhny Novgorod Opera and Ballet Theater in Russia, where he embarked on a photographic series capturing students immersed in the art of dance.
The internationally renowned choreographer Morihiro Iwata served as a dance teacher at this esteemed institution. A Japanese ballet dancer, Mr. Iwata held the position of soloist at the Bolshoi Theater from 1996 to 2012. Since 2019, he has assumed the role of artistic director for the ballet troupe at the Nizhny Novgorod Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, named after A.S. Pushkin.
Andrey Trubin skillfully documented this collaboration through a series of photographs, offering a glimpse into the dynamic environment of dance lessons and student performances.
The photographer's objective was to depict the intricacy and difficulty inherent in a dancer's work. Beyond the brevity of the dance itself lies an extensive undertaking, involving meticulous preparation and rigorous training at the ballet barre and within the dance hall. These young dancers dedicate all their time to training.
Trubin himself describes this photographic session in the following manner: "I received invitations to attend two classes, with each session spanning approximately one hour. The photography conditions proved challenging, given that the students were engaged in dynamic activities, refraining from posing while dancing and performing exercises. An important requirement for filming was not to disturb or interfere with the educational process. Additionally, technical challenges arose, stemming from issues such as backlighting and the dark attire worn by the dancers. This photo report was a real challenge for me."
"When I take photos, I am just an observer. The hardest part of this shoot was capturing and highlighting the beauty of motion and flexibility. The limited time and technical conditions also motivated me," says Andrey.
